Interview done by Andrew from Up and Coming weekly magizine
U&CW: How did the band come up with the name and when did the band form?
HF: (Billy) We first got together in the summer of 2001.
(Lutachrist) I came up with the name Heretics Fork, because to me this band represents unorthodox views on life and music. That's what it means to be a heretic, to express unorthodox views. The Heretics Fork is a medieval torture device that was utilized during the Spanish inquisition, by Christians on the "nonbelievers" also known as heretics. Which is also symbolic as well.
U&CW: What is everyone currently listening to at the moment as far as music goes?
HF: (Rob) New age Jazz to extreme underground modern rock. Bands like Swerve Driver, Cocteau Twins, Jean-luc ponty and Hum. (Lutachrist) Gwar's new release entitled, War Party and Marilyn Manson's best of CD, Lest We Forget. (Paul) I honestly enjoy listening to our in-house homework CD that contains new material that we are working on, more than anything else. The rest of my listening is talk radio. (Billy) New Suffocation, Internal Bleeding.
U&CW: What are Heretics Fork's goals for the year 2005?
HF: (Lutachrist) This year we are going to release our first full length CD. We also have a DVD that should be ready in a few months. When we get our full length and all our new art work, posters, DvDs, shirts and what have, done, I feel we'll be ready to take on the next level of challenges. Sending out press packs to larger labels and the national acts we have been networking with over the past two years; and of course getting as many good shows as possible. (Paul) To share our music with as many people as possible and record a full length CD. (Billy) We want to keep progressing and take it to the next level.
U&CW: Where do you see the band going in, let's say, five years?
HF: (Lutachrist) If things keep going like they have been, I see Heretics Fork in a very good spot in five years. If we stay as dedicated and driven as we have, I feel our music will reach out very far and continue to grow and progress. (Paul) I really see a potential for this to spread nationally and internationally based on the responses that this music brings. (Billy) As far as it possibly can. (Rob) I truly believe Heretics Fork will get picked up by a label before five years and has the potential to go far.
U&CW: When do you think the band will put out a full-length album?
HF: (Billy) It's in the works as we speak.
U&CW: What is your view on the local metal scene here in Fayetteville and as a whole in NC?
HF: (Rob) Well, NC honestly has some good bands and the metal scene here in Fayetteville seems to be picking up. (Lutachrist) I think the scene is great. There is a moderate amount of heavy bands in the region that I have a lot of respect for and enjoy performing with - Critical Assault, Syck, Crimson mask, and Myndflow to name a few. As far as media coverage, and show turnouts go, there is room to grow. As it has been the last two years or so; thanks to Jesters Pub for bringing in lots of great world known Metal bands like Deicide, Anthrax, and Suffocation. Lets not forget the two-day Snake Net Metal Radio: Metal Nation festival that consisted of brutal metal bands both signed and independent from all over the US. (Paul) To me, the scene is composed of a lot of dedicated youth, older fans and metal fans from the military. I've seen several good bands from this area that have had good local support and we definitely appreciate the support we get from them as well. (Billy) Actually its really picked up in the last five or six years.
U&CW: What inspires the band as a whole to write music, TV, media, news, world events, and personal issues?
HF: (Rob) To me it's a personal thing. Things I've experienced. It's just the love of music basically. (Paul) All of the above. (Billy) A little bit of everything, past events as well. (Lutachrist) I write about personal issues and views. I usually write my lyrics when something is bothering me; when I feel something should be brought to the attention of others. Writing songs is the best way for me to express the way I feel and think.
